X-Ring

X-Ring is also known as Quad-Ring. The standard grooves are deeper in comparison with O-ring glands. The four lips emerge more sealing capacity. It will not spiral twist in the groove. The diametrical squeeze is lower than with O-rings to reduce friction to make the life longer. It is used in static and dynamic sealing.

What is the purpose of O-ring?

The primary role of O-rings is to prevent the leakage of fluid or air by serving as a sealing mechanism. When compressed between two surfaces, the O-ring eliminates any clearance, effectively preventing the release of fluid or air. Furthermore, O-rings retain their original shape, naturally returning to their initial state once released. This inherent memory feature enables O-rings to establish seals even under minimal or zero pressure. Application of pressure causes the O-ring to compress against the groove wall, resulting in expansion in the opposite direction.

How do I pick the right O-ring?

O-rings are sealing and prevent unwanted loss.It should be considered a sufficient sealing surface contact pressure, a smaller friction and operating temperature to avoid permanent deformation.

  • Low Friction
  • The friction coefficient should be low between the O-ring and the device. That can make o-ring life growth and well abrasion resistance. It will still have a good seal damping effect after wearing.

  • Recommended O-ring application service temperature
  • O-ring material may fail due to high temperature or low temperature, chemical corrosion, vibration, wear and movement. At very low temperatures, almost all engineered materials are hardened and can not be sealed; at very high temperatures, the material may burn or decompose. So we should consider those circumstances to select the material.

  • Compression forces and Durability
  • (1) Hardness : The lower hardness and the bigger compression ; The higher hardness and the smaller compression. The low pressure will use the softener hardness and otherwise the opposite.
    (2)Material : The compression set on/about 20% , recommend NBR, EPDM, SILICONE material; The compression set on/about 15%, recommend special FKM, FKM/VITON and PU.

  • What is the process involved in the manufacturing of O-rings?

    Some manufacturing companies inject preheated material, such as rubber, into a mold cavity, in order to create O-rings. The mold cavity is then fitted with a plug on top, enabling to pressure the mold cavity. With pressure increasing inside of the mold cavity, the preheated material takes the shape of the mold cavity.

    Long-term storage of seals can cause physical changes, including hardening, softening, cracking or decomposition. The factors caused are damage, oxygen, light, ozone, temperature, humidity, oil or solvent.
